Background of the Study

National emergency response guidelines provide healthcare professionals with standardized protocols and best practices for managing medical emergencies. These guidelines are critical in ensuring that emergency care is consistent, effective, and of high quality. Adherence to such guidelines is particularly important in emergency nursing, where timely and accurate interventions can significantly affect patient outcomes. Studies have shown that adherence to evidence-based guidelines leads to improved patient safety, faster recovery times, and reduced complications (Lawal & Obinna, 2023).

Ondo State University Teaching Hospital (OSUTH) is a major medical facility in southwestern Nigeria, serving as a teaching hospital for medical students and a provider of healthcare to the public. The hospital’s emergency department is responsible for managing a wide range of medical emergencies, from trauma cases to acute illnesses. Despite the existence of national emergency response guidelines, there may be variations in how these guidelines are implemented and followed in practice. Understanding the level of adherence to these guidelines among emergency nurses is crucial to ensuring that patients receive the best possible care in line with national standards.

This study seeks to assess the adherence of emergency nurses to national emergency response guidelines at Ondo State University Teaching Hospital. It will investigate the extent to which nurses follow established protocols in their daily practice and identify factors that may affect adherence, such as knowledge gaps, training, and workload. The findings will provide insights into the importance of guideline adherence and suggest strategies for improving compliance among emergency nurses.

Statement of the Problem (300 words)

Despite the existence of national emergency response guidelines, adherence to these guidelines can be inconsistent across healthcare settings. In emergency departments, where rapid decision-making and quick interventions are required, adherence to standardized guidelines is essential for ensuring optimal patient outcomes. However, there is limited research on how closely emergency nurses at Ondo State University Teaching Hospital adhere to these national guidelines.

Inconsistent adherence to emergency response guidelines can lead to variations in care delivery, which may negatively impact patient safety and outcomes. Factors such as inadequate training, lack of awareness, high workload, and stressful work environments can influence nurses’ adherence to established protocols. This study aims to fill the gap by assessing how emergency nurses at OSUTH follow national emergency response guidelines and identifying factors that facilitate or hinder adherence.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of adherence to national emergency response guidelines among emergency nurses at Ondo State University Teaching Hospital.

2. To identify factors that influence adherence to emergency response guidelines in the emergency department.

3. To recommend strategies for improving adherence to national emergency response guidelines among emergency nurses.

Research Questions

1. To what extent do emergency nurses at Ondo State University Teaching Hospital adhere to national emergency response guidelines?

2. What factors influence emergency nurses’ adherence to national emergency response guidelines?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve adherence to these guidelines?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: There is no significant relationship between adherence to national emergency response guidelines and patient outcomes in the emergency department.

2. H₀: Knowledge gaps and inadequate training do not significantly affect adherence to emergency response guidelines among nurses.

3. H₀: Workload and stress do not significantly affect adherence to emergency response guidelines.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on emergency nurses at Ondo State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include potential biases in self-reported data and the difficulty of observing actual adherence to guidelines during the study.

Definitions of Terms

• Adherence to National Emergency Response Guidelines: The extent to which emergency nurses follow established protocols and best practices in managing medical emergencies.

• National Emergency Response Guidelines: Standardized protocols developed by national health authorities to guide healthcare professionals in responding to medical emergencies.

• Emergency Nurses: Nurses working in the emergency department, responsible for providing immediate care to patients in critical or life-threatening conditions.
